German to English Marketing Cosmetics, Beauty
"schützt die Feuchtigkeitsbarriere, soll beruhigend auf die Haut wirken"

In a product insert for a cream.
Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): Harald Moelzer (medical-translator)

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Please post the entire sentence Seeing the whole sentence could help clarify things
Teangacha (X) Jul 5, 2020:
Using 'must/has to' would be a problem if your skin reacts. No one product suits every skin.

'claims to' on a product packaging would not have people buying it. I've never seen that on the actual packaging for a skin cream.

They normally say 'soothes', moisturises..., and then you have the joy of discovering that you're the person it does neither for!!!! : )
With this product, they make the claim, but do cover themselves:

yes, "formulated" ( see my example sentence). The asker's question was how to translate "soll", here.
agree Lancashireman : Not too convinced by 'designed', but 'formulated' (which you have just directed another site user's attention to, and apologies for initially overlooking) works well.

must/has to

It must have a soothing and calming effect on the skin
Objective: To assess and compare the skin calming effect of cosmetic products containing 4-t-butylcyclohexanol (Eucerin(®) https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26805418/

Might have/Has nourishing and soothing/calming effect

In some way it supports and helps to soothe the skin. They might not have any scientific claims for this to be proven, so it depends how strong of a statement they want to make.
Example sentence:

The cream has a nourishing and soothing/ calming effect on your skin.

Peer comment(s):

disagree Cilian O'Tuama : Not what the German says, IMO.

Or so it has been reported..
neutral Chris Pr : No mention at all of 'properties' in the source text...//OK, that makes sense...still too llong-winded though... ;)

I am using that sentence as an example of how 'reportedly' is used in similar contexts. The query itself isn't about 'properties' so I don't need to care about that particular detail at all.

I've looked at some creams lying around and most say 'soothes', but one sun cream has said 'can help reduce the risk of sun induced allergies'.

It wouldn't put you off buying it, but possibly because the print is so small, you wouldn't read it in the first place!!!! ; )
