English term

Wye (Star)

English to French Tech/Engineering Telecom(munications)
Installation manual. This section includes the information necessary for installation and commissioning of a UAXTE or VAXTE broadcast transmitter.

"WHEN THE TWO OR THREE SINGLE PHASE INPUTS TO THE TRANSMITTER ARE DERIVED FROM A WYE (STAR) MAINS SERVICE, SPECIAL CARE MUST BE PAID TO THE NEUTRAL CONNECTION, AS THE NEUTRAL CONNECTION SERVES AS THE COMMON VOLTAGE REFERENCE TO ALL THREE PHASES."

'wye' (=Y) is mainly used in the US, 'star' in GB

'Y-grec' is sometimes found in FR too, but in my experience, 'étoile' is commoner.

neutral Tony M : Of course lots of things can be 'Y-shaped' — but this is specific terminology relating to 3-phase electricity, where we talk about star/delta connection — and we certainly don't refer to it as 'D-shaped'!
