German term

Anpassungsmodul

German to English Social Sciences Education / Pedagogy
I'm looking for a suitable English equivalent for "Anpassugsmodul" in an educational context.

It doesn't seem to be a particularly common term and is just mentioned in passing in the text that I'm currently translating.

I've found the following page that shows an example usage: https://www.th-luebeck.de/hochschule/fachbereich-elektrotech...

I'm not sure if it's referring to an optional module that you can add on to another course of study or is some form of conversion course that you have to take.

Discussion

D. I. Verrelli Sep 21, 2019:
"bridging module" There wasn't enough space in the evaluation field to note that occasionally "bridging module" could mean something else:
"The purpose of this module is to enable students to explore connections between Computer Science and another discipline. Often, the other discipline is the subject area studied in the first degree, although this is not necessarily the case."
https://www.cs.ubc.ca/students/undergrad/degree-programs/bcs...

But generally I think it's a good match:
"This module is designed for students who have transferred from a 22.5-credit programme structure to an updated 30-credit structure and whose accumulated credits leave them short of the 180 credits required to complete their Master's programme."
https://www.cefims.ac.uk/modules/M491/

"If you are not confident with basic accounting concepts, this subject includes an optional short intensive bridging module on the fundamentals of accounting."
https://www.collaw.edu.au/programs/legal-masters-program/acc...
D. I. Verrelli Sep 21, 2019:
Top-up I found also this:
"If you already have a foundation degree, Higher National Diploma or equivalent qualification, you may want to consider upgrading to a full undergraduate degree by studying a top-up degree at London Met.
A top-up degree is the final year (Level 6) of an undergraduate degree course and allows you to top up your existing qualification to a full BA, BSc or BEng degree.
Top-up degrees are also ideal if you're interested in studying the final year of your degree in London.
"
https://www.londonmet.ac.uk/courses/top-up/
In which case the top-up degree can be an end in itself, not 'merely' the means of progressing to further study.
Björn Vrooman Sep 13, 2019:
PS Yes, yes, I know it's about modules in this context:
"It costs £4,000 plus VAT or £3,250 plus VAT for those who have the YJEPC. Foundation degree students can now progress onto a BA Honours in Youth Justice by taking top-up modules."
https://www.cypnow.co.uk/cyp/feature/2007055/youth-justice-c...
Björn Vrooman Sep 13, 2019:
I think the German is overkill to begin with. Anpassung here means Angleichung an den (Master-)Standard. Zusatzmodul would have sufficed, IMO.

Why don't you use the following:
https://www.northampton.ac.uk/international/top-up-courses

This here sounds very similar to what you've asked about:
"A top-up programme is designed to enable a student, who has been awarded a credit bearing qualification by this University or another institution, to accumulate the additional credits necessary for a higher qualification."
https://www.winchester.ac.uk/about-us/leadership-and-governa...

...and...
"This is a top-up programme designed to build on your general understanding of business and management gained in your approved entry qualification. Your prior knowledge of business and management theories will be consolidated in order to further develop knowledge and skills with the aim of enabling you to apply that knowledge and those skills to your current or future business environment."

Björn Vrooman Sep 13, 2019:
@Adam and Ramey It's not that uncommon, I think. It can be used in a non-university context as well:
"Nach einer längeren Unterbrechung ist es daher für einen erfolgreichen Wiedereinstieg ins Berufsleben unumgänglich, erworbene Kenntnisse und Fertigkeiten zu aktivieren und wieder auf den neuesten Stand zu bringen."
https://www.eckert-schulen.de/berufsfoerderungswerk/bildungs...

It's the same website Anne quoted but a different page.

There is even an entire Anpassungssemester:
"...abgeschlossenes Bachelor-Studium der Wirtschaftsinformatik oder eines in der Regel eng verwandten Studienganges mit mindestens 210 ECTS-Punkten. Bei einem Abschluss mit 180 ECTS-Punkten besteht wahlweise die Möglichkeit ein BAföG-gefördertes Anpassungssemester zu absolvieren oder die fehlenden ECTS-Punkte parallel zum Masterstudium bis zur Anmeldung der Masterarbeit zu erbringen."
https://nachrichten.idw-online.de/2018/08/27/neuer-masterstu...

It's about Nacherwerb of ECTS points: https://www.leuphana.de/professional-school/berufsbegleitend...

Hmm I am not a great fan of Linguée, but in an educational/university context, this makes sense (and confirms my suggest by the way)

bridging module

this is a module that helps students adapt to a new and/or related programme of study.
4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks for all the suggestions! I think "bridging module" works best in the context, so have gone with this option."

Conversion module

I would read this as a learning unit/module which will get some "up to speed" to take a course (e.g. a Master's) but whose previous academic record does not fully meet the requirements for the course OR allows for previous relevant experience of a non-academic kind to be recognised/accredited via the module. The module thus provides a "top-up" which will enable the applicant to apply for/participate in the advanced course on a fully "qualified" basis.
Example sentence:

The Conversion Module offers recognition for prior learning through Middlesex University, UK, and provides the opportunity to benchmark your practice with a learning cohort in a similar Professional Review as participants of the Certificate in Coaching Pr

neutral Ramey Rieger (X) : Makes more sense, but 100%CL is mighty confident.

You’re right! Next level down required (but I cannot work out how to adapt my first reply!) (Still think “conversion” trumps “adaptation” overall though.)
neutral writeaway : I also feel that 100% confidence is overkill. I'm not sure this is right https://www.tu-chemnitz.de/wirtschaft/studium/master/finance...

agree Armorel Young : "conversion course" is a standard term and googles very well

It is certainly the usual term for graduates in NON-legal studies who now want to change to studies in that field:https://targetjobs.co.uk/career-sectors/law-barristers/29162...

Foundation Course

I found the information below and a use of the term by Eckert Schulen.

so I would suggest Foundation Course
Peer comment(s):

disagree Gordon Matthews : I would understand a foundation course to be a year long full-time course of study, e.g. an arts foundation course, which prepares students to start a Bachelor of Arts course, perhaps specialising in some particular form of art.

disagree Charles Rothwell (X) : As the title implies, a "foundation" course lays the basis for later studies, but a "conversion" course recognises/accredits prior learning/achievement as an element of a further course of studies: http://www.studyin-uk.com/study-options/foundation/

agree Lancashireman : I'm agnostic about what's on offer here, but I do recognise a concerted overreaction when I see one on this site.

neutral D. I. Verrelli : It's good to be open-minded. What I call a "subject" other people call a "course", while others might call it a "unit"; what I call a "course", others might call a "program"; and so on. "Foundation" can be to address 'deficiency'. Stick with "module"?

Or adaptation/updating course.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Charles Rothwell (X) : One instance where this sense is meant: https://www1.essex.ac.uk/hhs/documents/cpd/hs745-dental-hygi... On the whole, I think this applies more in a technical sphere (than educational):https://www.fakro.com/roof-windows/electric-

neutral writeaway : imo it's more of a specialization course. from the explanation here. https://www.tu-chemnitz.de/wirtschaft/studium/master/finance...

Elucidate!// Sure! but the general term 'adaption course' (Math, Science, Banking) fits, don't you think? The course subject is specified.
agree Gordon Matthews : Given the nature and purpose of the module, i.e. to bring students up-to-speed in a subject area which they have not yet studied (much), I think "adaptation" is more appropriate than "conversion", which implies converting e.g. from chemistry to history.

transfer student module

This could work in the US and Canada. Not sure about the UK or other regions. A transfer student is a student who has already done some course work at one college (Erststudium) and then decides to transfer to another. This concept also applies to secondary schools.

"The following non-degree credit classes are offered by this division:

Learning support courses in English, mathematics, and reading
Learning support classes in science and social sciences for students with CPC deficiencies
Specialized language skills courses for non-native speakers of English
Modules for transfer students in such areas as presentation graphics, word processing, and information retrieval."

assimilation module

Since this is not an everyday German term, the word 'assimilation' best captures (for me, at least) the core essence of "Angleichung von Vorkenntnissen".
