French term

ne sont pas mises en cohérence en vue de leur exploitation

French to English Social Sciences Livestock / Animal Husbandry Land use, land tenure security
De nombreuses expériences dans le sens de la formalisation et de la sécurisation des droits fonciers des communautés locales existent, mais pour le moment, elles sont éparses et ne sont pas mises en cohérence en vue de leur exploitation.

I translated the sentence as such: Although there have been several initiatives geared towards formalising and securing the land rights of local communities, so far, these attempts have remained sparse and inconsistent with one another to make the most of these experiences.

The client remarked: ne pas être mis en cohérence ne signifie pas forcément qu’elles seraient incompatibles si elles étaient regroupées au sein d’un même projet par exemple, et les exploiter ne signifie pas la même chose que d’en tirer le maximum

For "ne sont pas mises en cohérence", I am thinking of "not consistently organised" or "not properly coordinated", but I think there may be better proposals.
I don't really know how to render "en vue de leur exploitation"

B D Finch Jul 17, 2019:
@Germaine You can harmonise policies and practices, but I don't think you can harmonise experiences or even experiments. As for "initiatives", yes, they can be harmonised, but I think "initiatives" is a mistranslation.
Germaine Jul 16, 2019:
...and have not been harmonized ?

have not been coordinated with a view to their general deployment

I am aware that "general" is an addition, but I think the sentence makes more sense with it.

agree ormiston : for deployment purposes?

Thanks ormiston. No, I don't think that would be a good way of putting it.
agree Daryo : harmonised // turned into a coherent policy / set of rules ?

have remained illogical in terms of their operation.

There have been several initiatives geared towards formalising and securing the land rights of local communities, but up to now, these attempts have remained subject to a scatter-gun approach, and illogical (lacking rationality) in terms of their operation.
Peer comment(s):

neutral philgoddard : I think "illogical" is too strong a word.

are insufficiently coordinated (from an operational viewpoint).

I think your assumption is correct. You could possibly leave out the words in brackets, as I'm not sure they add much to the sentence.

I don't think you've got the punctuation of "so far" quite right. I suggest "These attempts have so far..."

have not been turned into a coherent set of rules in order to make them generally applicable

"cohérence" = internal consistency, absence of contradictions

if you want to turn a disjointed collection of separate rules / decisions / policies into something that will be generally applicable, you have to make a "coherent set of rules" out of them.
