I know it means that many people who were indentured laborers, as an example those who came to work to America in colonial times; they paid their ship fare by going into such a contract. There is always the connotation of "almost being a slave"

Te doy esta opción un poco larga porque encaja muy bien con la idea: es como si fuera servidumbre (no esclavitud, ojo, no hay propiedad sobre la persona) pero por contrato. Pago mínimo normalmente en especie, ciertas restricciones de libertad individual etc. La expresión, muy amplia, serviría para todo contexto.
En wikipedia lo he visto como "trabajador no abonado" (https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trabajador_no_abonado), pero psé...
