English term

bridge cutting

English Tech/Engineering Materials (Plastics, Ceramics, etc.) marble production
We are a leading manufacturer of bridge cutting machines for marble production.

What is the bridge in this context? A 3-min video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRr90_zbNKU shows that it is a cutting machine mounted on a kind of bridge. Please help confirm!

English term (edited): bridge

bridge-type structure

So the "bridge" part is the crossbeam resting on the sidebeams so it looks like a "bridge"

And the cutting machine runs along the crossbeam to cut the slab below.

So the marble is placed on a supporting trestle or table that can be tilted and swivelled while the cutting machine runs along the crossbeam above it

From the video it's clear that the supporting "table" can be tilted and swivelled to get the block into position to be cut.

"bridge" and "cutting are both adjectives here with the noun "machine"

You can see the "bridge" structure better here

In actual translation, this is translated into a kind of hanging cutting machinein my native language due to the fact that the rotatable cutter hangs on the movable crossbeams to do its job."

beam/main horizontal support

The main part of the bridge(the whole structure) is the beam where the cutting machine is settled.

gantry cutting machine

While you will find many references to bridge cutting machines (mainly not from English-speaking countries), I think it would be more correct to use the term "gantry".

As explained by Yvonne, you have parsed this incorrectly and the source term is "bridge cutting machine".

Following Yvonne's comment below, I found this uk website: http://www.stoneequipmentinternational.com/search.asp and the equipment is called "bridge saw". Looking at the pictures, it occurred to me that the supports either side are not really gantry-type and, in at least one case, they are two parallel masonry walls. On the other hand, this (Chinese) website http://www.ninesun-stone.com/processing-machines/yxcm-25-Gan... calls it a gantry and it is, indeed a gantry.

So, I would now suggest that it might be a question of seeing a photo or drawing of the equipment concerned to decide whether to use the term "bridge" or "gantry". Then, use "bridge" if it's a beam that bridges a gap between supports on either side of the stone to be cut, where those supports are not trestle type components of the machine and use "gantry" if the supports are trestle-type components of the machine.

agree cmile : yeah, I think this is the more familiar term for that bridge type cranes onto which machines are mounted...

Thanks cmile.
neutral Yvonne Gallagher : yes, "gantry" structure, but I believe Asker was looking for an explanation rather than a term as I think it's for translation from English.//1000s of ads for "bridge cutting machine", manufacturers' name it seems, so not necessarily "wrong".

I wouldn't use "structure". In order to translate correctly from English, it would help the Asker to be able to look up the technically correct term (gantry), rather than the wrong one (bridge).//Changed my mind. See added note above.
