This is me again with another question.

Below you will find the text in the target language:

Una vez concluida la Estrategia de Pais, se realizará un período de reflexión sobre su contenido. Esto con el propósito de **lograr la apropiación** y adecuación de este importante instrumento de gestión.

My try:

... in order to build ownership and (foster /encourage the) adoption of this important management instrument.

Discussion

Lydianette Soza (asker) May 13, 2019:
Hello everybody,

I do apologize for my late reply. After consulting with the client they decided that the most appropriate translation for the term would be "ensuring the adoption"; although I still believe that it should include the term "ownership".

Anyway, thank you everybody for your assistance.
Lydianette Soza (asker) Apr 24, 2019:
Firstly, I have to thank to everybody for taking the time to answer my question, and also to provide information.

I have to say that I agree with Charles when he says "I certainly can't rule out the possibility that "apropiación" means acquiring ownership or adopting here, ***but I find it an odd choice of word if it does***"
Charles Davis Apr 23, 2019:
(2) There are also a lot of examples of "apropiación y adecuación" or "adecuación y apropiación" (many of them in educational contexts, as it happens), and although in most of them "apropiación" could mean "appropriation", in some it can't. When "apropiación" is followed by "a", that meaning is impossible, as here:

"Nivel de adecuación y apropiación a los procesos históricos y contexto político actual"
https://www.academia.edu/27592192/El_derecho_a_decidir_su_há...

And in the following, likewise, it can only mean adaptation or something similar. This is talking about 8-year-old autistic children in the classroom:

"De acuerdo a esto se deben realizar las adaptaciones de ambiente que se consideren pertinentes para una mayor apropiación y adecuación del niño para con el aula"
https://en.calameo.com/read/0044920295e3ce697245b (p. 7)

It is surely out of the question that this means appropriating children.

It is quite possible that the same meaning applies in the case before us and that it is likewise a pleonasm. I think this is probably true of most cases of this couplet. I can't be sure, which is why I haven't posted an answer, but I don't think should be dismissed so lightly.
Charles Davis Apr 23, 2019:
Who's doing the conflating? Whether "apropiación" and "adecuación" are discrete concepts depends on what the writer means by "apropiación". It is true, of course, that "adecuación" means adjustment or adaptation. It does not follow that "apropiación" cannot mean rendering suitable.

I raised this possibility simply because I thought it should at least be considered. The fact (and it is a fact) that "apropiación" is ambiguous had not even been mentioned, whether because people were unaware of it or assumed it could not be relevant I don't know.

I certainly can't rule out the possibility that "apropiación" means acquiring ownership or adopting here, but I find it an odd choice of word if it does, since it usually means taking something over without consent. It's usually pejorative.

However, the fact that the other sense of "apropiación" is practically synonymous with "adecuación", and that the expression is more or less pleonastic, doesn't rule it out. Pleonasms are not uncommon. An appreciable number of examples of "apropiar y adecuar" or "adecuar y apropiar" can be found. Here "apropiar" can't mean appropriate/take ownership; that would be "apropiarse". It must mean "make suitable".

Do not conflate apropiación and adecuación It is the adecuación that means adjustment or adaptation (Spanglish, Italo-English or Franglais: 'Adaption'). They are two discrete (separate) vs. discreet concepts. So it's not a good idea to obscure the picture that is already painted in somewhat questionable Spanish.
Sophie Cherel Apr 22, 2019:
Or instead of "order", perhaps something more like adapt/tailor/customise (ie render suitable for our purposes)
Sophie Cherel Apr 22, 2019:
I think Charles has the key. Apropiación here seems to mean "render suitable". So I would more or less agree with David's answer but rephrase it (because I find the grammar of his sentence slightly awkward): eg. "the aim is to successfully order and apply this important...."
Charles Davis Apr 21, 2019:
apropiación Apropiación means "acción y efecto de apropiar o apropiarse".

Apropiar means "aplicar a cada cosa lo que le es propio y más conveniente": to adapt something to its purpose or render it suitable.

Apropiarse means "tomar para sí alguna cosa, haciéndose dueña de ella": to appropriate something, make it one's own, acquire possession of it (usually without title).

So apropiación can (and usually does) mean "appropriation", related to ownership (making propio), but it can also mean "adjustment" or "adaptation", rendering suitable (making apropiado). Since it's followed here by "adecuacion", my guess is that it means the latter.
