German term

Lichtdämpfungen/m

German to English Tech/Engineering Electronics / Elect Eng Smoke detectors
Full sentence: "Aufgrund seiner einzigartigen Ansaugtechnik verfügt der [Alarm] über eine Alarmempfindlichkeit im Bereich von 0,005 % … 20 % Lichtdämpfungen/m."

I'm not sure how to translate "Lichtdämpfungen/m"; firstly, does "Lichtdämpfungen" mean "light attentuation", "light absoprtion", "dimming", "subdueing of light" or something else, and should it be pluralised in English? Secondodly, what is the "/m"? Is it "per minute" or a typo?

Thank you!

oder Lichttrübung Thanks for the refs, Kim. I'm pretty sure it's a translation from EN. Here is the NIST definition:
"Obscuration (%/ft) This is the beam obscuration computed from the % transmittance and the path length of 5.00 ft. The relative combined standard uncertainty is 4.0 %."

Example aspirating smoke detectors:

https://www.controlfiresystems.com/media/catalog/pdf/Vesda.p...

it seems that this is a measure of how the sensitivity of the alarm reduces as a function of the distance.

per meter obscuration

Seems to be the normal way of expressing this. Similar to optical density but for high sensitivity detectors.

 attenuation of light per meter

Kenne ich auch als Lichtschwächung.

Substantive   attenuation of light   - of a film base [TECH.]  die Lichtschwächung  Pl.: die Lichtschwächungen

Attenuation in fiber optics, also known as transmission loss, is the reduction in intensity of the light beam (or signal) as it travels through the transmission medium.

In physics, attenuation or, in some contexts, extinction is the gradual loss of flux intensity through a medium. For instance, dark glassesattenuate sunlight, lead attenuates X-rays, and water and air attenuate both light and soundat variable attenuation rates.

Other expressions:

The transparency of aquatic systems is represented by a value referred to as the extinction coefficient or diffuse attenuation coefficient (Kd or η in older literature).
:
The Rayleigh scattering extinction coefficient for particle-free air is 0.012 km−1 for “green” light (γ = 0.05 μm) at sea level.29 This permits a visual range of ∼320 km.
:
Suspended particles are the most important factor in visibility reduction. In most instances, the visual quality of air is controlled by particle scattering and is characterized by the extinction coefficientbscat. The size of particles plays a crucial role in their interaction with light. Other factors are the refractive index and shape of the particles, although their effect is harder to measure and is less well understood.

extinction coefficient [1/m]

Further research revealed a still better and more scientific term, which deserves a separate answer: extinction coefficient.

The coefficient k in this equation is known as the extinction coefficient. In the example we have just presented, k=0.035 per meter
