Residence Unit and Other Enrollment Categories

In addition to registering for individual courses, students in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences are required to register for an enrollment category. In all PhD and almost all MA programs, this is typically done by registering for Residence Units, which provide the basis for tuition charges. If you have questions about registration categories, please contact your department or program administrator.

Tak, zaliczeniowa jednostka rezydencyjna (z tytułu rezydencji) też pasuje.

Below are Residence Unit Categories for each of the MA Programs. For more information about Residence Units, see also Tuition & Fees.

Full-time students must be registered for a Full Residence Unit (RU) in the first two semesters and an Extended Residence Unit (ER) in their final semester. A student who is registered for a full RU or ER is considered to have full time status, regardless of the number of courses. Both RU and ER allow any number of points up to and including twenty points. ER is required after completing a total of TWO RUs. Always check with ISSO about international and visa-related issues.

Domestic students have the option of being full-time or part-time. One RU is considered full-time. Part-time allows for QR (Quarter Residence Unit) or HR (Half Residence Unit). ALL MA Program students are required to complete two RUs to graduate.

After completing a total of two RUs, all students must register for ER. One can register for ER for more than one semester (e.g., Summer Term and Fall Term).

At San Francisco State University (see below), the student must receive credit for courses taken at the home institution (SFSU), rather than at another college, that is, the student must be in residence.
At Columbia, this is refers to a block of time spent at the university as resident. Limited RU credit may be granted for time spend at another university.
cccccc
One residence unit consists of one term (fall or spring) of full-time study. Six (6) residence units beyond the undergraduate degree are required for the Ph.D. Continuous registration until completion of all requirements is obligatory. A maximum of two (2) residence units may be credited for academic work completed at another university or in another division of Columbia University upon review and approval by the faculty.

Residence Units Requirement
For award of the baccalaureate degree, all students are required to complete a minimum of 30 units in residence at SF State. Of the 30-unit residence requirement, 24 units must be upper-division courses and twelve units, upper-division or lower-division, must be in the major. Nine of these residence units must be earned in Segment III of the GE Program. Units earned for courses awarding extension credit or credit by examination or evaluation do not carry residence credit.
