English term

front-end duty

English to French Bus/Financial Retail supermarkets
Manager Availability
Is the manager on front-end duty available and visible?

Not sure what other context to give. I understand that front-end refers to the managers dealing with the customers (not sitting in the back office) but do not know how to translate the term "on front-end duty"correctly.

Your suggestions would be very welcome.

Discussion

Cassandra Delacote (asker) Apr 9, 2018:
AllegroTrans Apr 8, 2018:
Germaine please post your suggestion
Germaine Apr 8, 2018:
Cassandra Delacote (asker) Apr 7, 2018:
Your comments are quite correct and in the light of this and your discussion entry detailing the duties of the manager, could you not submit a possible translation?
Daryo Apr 7, 2018:
the "front end" of a big supermarket is more than just the entrance to the store.

It's all of the area accessible to clients, as opposed to the "back end" - areas reserved for admin, staff rooms, deliveries, storage etc...

You won't get a manager (one of the managers, not THE manager) on "front-end duty" in a supermarket meeting and greeting clients at the entrance - this manager would be too busy doing other things (- see refs)

Is the manager on front-end duty available and visible? most likely means "available and visible" for staff working in the sales/shop area of the supermarket.

(in French)

gérant de magasin

https://www.cnfdi.com/fiche-metier/devenir-gerant-de-magasin...

Merci Gilou !
disagree Daryo : yes, and also unfortunately NO: "front end duty" is what this character is supposed to be doing, what he/she is charge of, NOT what is his/her job title. // also, it doesn't say nowhere "the manager of the whole store".

1. I meant to translate the full expression "manager on front-end duty". 2. Another alternative may have been "chef de rayon", but the original only refers to ONE manager. 3. If "yes and no" at the same time, why "disagree" instead of "neutral"?
neutral HERBET Abel : ????

?

disagree Daryo : context: Bus/Financial - Retail / supermarkets // "front-end duty" is slightly more than just "meeting and greeting" ...

neutral AllegroTrans : I don't think this person is a receptionist

Frequently, web development roles are specialized and fall into one of two categories: front end or back end. A front-end web developer focuses on aspects that are visible to the website visitor, such as design, multimedia, and interactivity, creating webpages that combine text, images, and links.
Peer comment(s):

neutral AllegroTrans : You really think web development is relevant to this person's duties?

disagree Germaine : Sujet: retail/supermarkets.

Peer comment(s):

neutral AllegroTrans : He isn't the store manager simply a front end manager; in my experience supermarkets have several managers/sub-managers

not quite - there is(are) other manager(/s) - dealing with ordering supplies, receiving deliveries, managing the stocks at the "back end" etc... this one is only in charge of managing the area open to customers.
agree AllegroTrans : Yes, and he/she doesn't "stand at the front" all of the time!
