Herbmione Granger Apr 8, 2018:
also appropriate "Wildlife openings"

official translations FWIW https://en.langenscheidt.com/german-english/schneise
opening / Schneise beim Schießen

https://en.langenscheidt.com/german-english/lichtung
Clearing, opening, glade / Lichtung im Wald

You could specify that the clearing/opening through the forest is longer than wide.

Image There may be better translations for different contexts. This is what I'm picturing, more or less:

Jäger is an important profession in Germany. AFAIK hunting is mainly a sport in the US.

Herbalchemist, in that case, if this were my translation job I would probably just use the word "clearing" or a "cleared pathway".
Herbmione Granger Apr 7, 2018:
Thanks, Kristina I have not heard of sendero, which may be useful in the Southwest. I suppose it depends on whether JF wants to use a forestry or a hunting term. As I understand it, there are paths designed for people (Waldweg) and there are paths/cuts through the woods designed for some other purpose, and these are not really trails, although you can take them as short*cuts* through the woods.
It seems that "shooting lane" is used in clearing trees/branches *by the hunter* for hunting and may be preceded by "forbidden" in some US states.
There is also the interesting problem of Schussschneisen being used as a type of land or biotope. Sometimes, vegetables are grown there. Often, forage plants for the Wild. Seems strange to me to limit it to a lane for hunting.
Kristina Cosumano (X) Apr 7, 2018:
Agree with Johanna Shooting lane. In Texas, however, you'll find American hunters who refer to these as senderos. http://test.m.ourhomeground.com/entries/definition/sendero
Herbmione Granger Apr 7, 2018:
Schuß Gangels made a good point. This is "just an open space free of vegetation or tree growth." The presence of a hunter or hunting tower makes it a Schussschneise. Obviously shouldn't walk in these areas during certain times of the day.

shooting lanes

Schussschneise is more commonly known as “Jagdschneise” and translates quite literally as ”shooting lane”
You clear or trim shooting lanes, as shown here:

Actuality, it looks a noun here (keeping the forest paths and clearings... free).

For a better picture:

Not a hunter, but I don't think that there's a simple term in English that won't be confused with a shooting range. You could work in "treestand trajectory" someplace.

Upon further research and reflection, "forest openings" seems like a good choice here, especially since it seems focused on taking care of/managing the land. Not sure that the hunting/shooting part is needed.

Schnipp-Schnapp. Prima Werkzeug!

Thanks. I added some descriptions that could help. I'm, admittedly, out of my element, although I'm a frequent at the local forests.
