I know that "der Westerwald" is a region. So it wouldn't make sense to translate "im Westerwald" as in Westerwald because that makes it sound like a town. In the Westerwald region?

in the Westerwald
With the definite article, it doesn't sound like a town to my ear. Or as you suggest yourself, 'in the Westerwald region'

Comment: "Thanks everyone. I needed to be reassured that "in the Westerwald" was acceptable."

: There is a "Kreis-Westerwald" but that is not what I would normally think of when hearing the name.

Westerwald region or area
It's not a specific town or even a county- it's a generally hilly, wooded area in central Germany. Although for car registration purposes is is demarked "WW".
Many tourist broschures quite legitimately translate it as the "Western Forest" area of Germany.
Frederick Forsyth calls it that in one of his novels, too. And he is famous for his thorough research.
My research?
I live there. And it's cold and snowing, right now (as always, when the wind's not blowing).

Same sense as the \"Black Forest\" in your context- I think they\'re just pinpointing it geographically.

Yes? Thought it was always 10° warmer where you are. But if you lived here you wouldn't need to repair your bicycle tyres.

: Black Forest would be acceptable as such, as that is a well-known area.'Westerwald region' is safer and a usual convention for generally lesser-known places IMHO. And from what I have just learned above, it sounds as dodgy as the Tennessee mountains ;-)

Yeah! And the people that live here are even dodgier! (I'd better double bolt all doors and windows tonight after saying that- probably half the Westerwald are logged on to KrudoZ tonight- (no footie on the box).
