Finnish term

täydellinen verenkuva

Finnish to English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
Hello,

"perusverenkuva" and "täyellinen verenkuva" refer to different blood count procedures, of which the latter is apparently more comprehensive than the former.

Yet, "complete blood count" seems to be a typical translation of "perusverenkuva". If that is accurate, then how does one express "täydellinen verenkuva" in English, given that it is even *more* complete than a perusverenkuva?

Thanks

Discussion

Tarja Karjalainen Dec 18, 2017:
That's why I suggested "basic blood count" for the "perusverenkuva" and full (or complete) blood count for the täydellinen verenkuva.
Pertti Hietaranta Dec 18, 2017:
Full blood count = complete blood count I don't think full blood count helps us differentiate between perusverenkuva and täydellinen verenkuva here since the two expressions complete blood count and full blood count are apparently synonymous, cf. e.g. Wikipedia at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Complete_blood_count: "A complete blood count (CBC), also known as a complete blood cell count, full blood count (FBC), or full blood exam (FBE), is a blood panel requested by a doctor or other medical professional that gives information... ."

The former just seems to be an expression favoured especially in the UK while the latter is apparently favored in the US.

full blood count

It is not entirely accurate to call the Finnish PVK a complete (or full) blood count, as it does not include the differential count. For some reason it seems that in other parts of the world FBC (or CBC) is the routine haematology test, whereas in Finland, the routine seems to be the basic blood count, and the diffs are ordered separately, if needed. I would therefore use "Basic blood count" for PVK (as strange as it sounds) and full blood count/complete blood count (depending on your target country's preference) for the "täydellinen verenkuva".

Just to clarify, I'm proposing "basic blood count" for the "perusverenkuva" and "full/complete blood count" (depending on your target audience) for "täydellinen verenkuva".

neutral Pertti Hietaranta : I understand, but if the solution is based on the Finnish way of doing things and the translation is in English - to be used by speakers of English - I'm not sure that it will work. For many, CBC/FBC will still mean 'perusverenkuva'. Old habits die hard.

Yes, I agree, and in most cases it could be translated as FBC/CBC without problems, but if you need to differentiate the two that's when the problem arises. I suppose, alternative way would be to use "FBC/CBC without diffs" or something similar?

comprehensive metabolic panel

Perhaps comprehensive metabolic panel is what you're looking for? Please see the examples and the reference below.

Sorry, the correct URL for the examples and the reference is

Example sentence:

Common blood tests include a Complete Blood Count (CBC) with differential, and a Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP).

A CMP is a group of blood tests that check your body’s balance of electrolytes, blood sugar, proteins and how well the liver and kidneys are working.

Note from asker:
Here is one decsription I found of "täydellinen verenkuva" as contrasted with simpler blood counts: Verenkuvan analysointiin käytetään yleensä automaattisia verenkuva-analysaattoreita, joilla saadaan numeerista informaatiota punasoluista, punasolujen hemoglobiinista, valkosolumäärästä sekä verihiutaleista. Täydellinen verenkuva sisältää näiden lisäksi myös valkosolujen erittelylaskennan, jossa valkosolulajit tunnistetaan toisistaan. disagree Tarja Karjalainen : Täydellinen verenkuva refers to a full haematology test (RBC WCC, Hb, Plat, diff. etc.), not metabolic indicators, even if it would be a more comprehensive test to include those as well.
