French term

États Généraux de l’Alimentation

French to English Other Agriculture Food production
Referred to in a news letter. Plenty of examples of the French title, but can't find it in any of the usual places translated into English. It is a French government initiative launched last year, aimed at reviewing/consulting on food production/consumption practices.
Proposed translations (English)
4 +4 (French) National Food Conference

(French) National Food Conference

This is what the French Ministry of Agriculture seems to be calling it:

http://agriculture.gouv.fr/french-national-food-conference

"The on-going experience with France’s National Food Conference (États Généraux de l’Alimentation) that are heavily dominated by large private interests (agroindustry and retail groups in particular) shows that creating this power balance is not easy even in what is widely considered as an advanced democratic set-up. And it makes sense, I think, since "États Généraux" implies a general assembly or conference:

I know just what you mean. You're welcome!

Also... just to add to writeaway's pearl of wisdom, 'nothing beats a bit of research' a bit of generosity from colleagues when one is struggling on a short deadline is also pretty unbeatable!

Thanks :)
agree Daryo : personally I would prefer "convention", but this is also fine

Thanks, Daryo. I think "convention" would be a good word to use. You could also call it a "congress", perhaps. But there is something to be said for using the term adopted by the body responsible, provided it is acceptable.
