How about : boosting the acceleration response ?
"improving the acceleration performance" may be close to the intended meaning but sounds too bland (as limp as a wet mop, really.) There seems to be an overtone of engineering effort to break another performance barrier, in this phrase. In this sense, Cinefil-san's term "response" works very nicely to convey this implied tension between the engine or vehicle's actual delivery and the one the test team is striving for.
