Spanish to English Other Furniture / Household Appliances Work bench for circular saws
Hi all,

I'm translating pages on a retail site from Spanish (Spain) into British English and am having trouble with one section of a product description relating to a work bench for circular saws.

The tricky phrase appears in the following sentence: 'El tope angular está equipado con elementos de deslizamiento y de compensación de juego guiados por resortes. Con él se pueden realizar cómodamente cortes angulares exactos de hasta 180° en serie.'

I've been on the manufacturer website and it provided the following translation: 'with spring-guided play compensation and gliding elements'.

I've done some further research and there doesn't seem to be any other products that have 'play compensation', so I have a feeling that it could have been MT'd. Could someone help please?

How Google Translate works Every time someone runs a translation, the system stores the result. That's how statistical systems are designed. So if Matthew already ran the phrase, everyone who runs the text again is going to get the same result.

Not a machine translation! The website is very well written using precise professional terminology. No chance that it's a machine translation. If I were you, I would copy its language wherever possible.

"juego de compensación" Your document may be a back-translation from original English. The "juego de compensación" appears to be a Spanish mistranslation. In this context, 'play' means movement of the guide due to an external force, usually a movement of the hand. Since in this case the movement is unintended, there's a spring to keep the guide steady and compensate for any "jiggling". Thus, the underlying meaning is 'compensation to accommodate play'. The Spanish is reversed.

(I struggled with this problem when I was learning mechanical drafting and would have appreciated having a spring to hold the guide in place.)

IMO, the word "compensation" is meaningless. I have added links below to suggestion that "compensación for resorte" is "spring balancing".

In my third link above regarding the Master Cut 1500 series precision saw table, the translation was simply "spring-loaded gliding element" which appears to be a better translation than the one Matthew posted. Regards.

I disagree. I ran it again: "The angular stop is equipped with sliding elements and spring-guided play compensation"; AFAIA concerned, "play compensation" means nothing. Resorte de compensación de juego is a "take up spring" (Diccionario Politécnico).
