Discussion

Joseph Tein Sep 30, 2017:
compensated / controlled I think the story here is that the patient entered the hospital with her COPD out of control, she was treated and discharged after the symptoms were brought back under control. I find a small number, but still convincing, of online instances of "compensated" COPD and "controlled" (well/poorly) COPD. Regarding John's answer below, I don't see anything in this brief text that talks about "in order to" or "in an attempt to" do anything; I think it was a fait accompli at the time of discharge from the hospital.
Ashok Pipal (asker) Sep 30, 2017:
From elsewhere in the report; the patient was in Instituto Nacional de Geriartria, Santiago, Chile. She was admitted for COPD with acute infection of the respiratory tract.
Joseph Tein Sep 30, 2017:
context? You're sure there's no further context or background information? Patient's presenting complaints? symptoms?

in order to balance / in compensation / in an attempt to stabilize

Peer comment(s):

neutral Joseph Tein : EPOC, here, is much likely to stand for "enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva crónica" since this a Spanish-to-English question. (This would be COPD in English.) EPOC is not likely to be a hospital discharge diagnosis.//See my comment in the Discussion.

By golly, you're right! ... Still, the idea of "en compensación" is "trying to compensate", "trying to balance or compensate the lack of oxygenation..." I'd think...
