: EPOC, here, is much likely to stand for "enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva crónica" since this a Spanish-to-English question. (This would be COPD in English.) EPOC is not likely to be a hospital discharge diagnosis.//See my comment in the Discussion.

By golly, you're right! ... Still, the idea of "en compensación" is "trying to compensate", "trying to balance or compensate the lack of oxygenation..." I'd think...
