German term

Flankensteilheit

German to English Tech/Engineering Electronics / Elect Eng Field-effect transistors
This term refers go a field-effect transistor putting through power to various components of an electronic system at a pre-defined "Flankensteilheit".

I've seen the terms "edge steepness" and "rate of increase/change" but I'm suspicious the first term is no more than a transliteration and that the second is incomplete.

I'm aware that "Steilheit" refers to steepness and guess that it could also be translated as "rate of increase". Ths leaves me with the "Flanken-" bit of the term.

Here's the full sentence in which it appears:

Can anyone help?

Discussion

Johannes Gleim Sep 18, 2017:
@ Martin I added some references for operational amplifiers like LM741, confirming that the slew rate is expressed in V/µs, describing a voltage rise (speed). In German the term is translated by "Spannungsanstiegsrate" correspondingly.

and other standardized terms. BTW: "slew rate" is not standardized by IEC.
Martin Crich Sep 18, 2017:
Slew rate is also a function of amplification, as can be seen in this TI spec. for the LM741, one of the most commonly used operational amplifiers:

http://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/lm741.pdf

No mention of edge steepness in there...
Johannes Gleim Sep 18, 2017:
@ Jaime Please do not confuse "edge steepness" by "slew rate"! There is a fine distinction between both terms. Even some some experts do not distinguish correctly and mix up both.

"egde steepness" describes the steepnes of the edge", a function of filtering or amplification, what is the correct term in your context.

"slew rate" describes the rate of voltage changes beween a specified min. value to a specified max. value. I does not describe properties of filters nor the frequency damping or the step response.

slew rate

Slew rate is the time an electronic signal takes to change from one value to another. It's often used to describe the time taken for the output of an integrated circuit to change from a logical 0 to a logical 1.
Wikipedia is for once correct here.

although this seems like a literal translation, in my electronics past this was the standard term.

"slew rate" is not bad, but more a description than the real term.

The principal translation of "flankensteilheit" is "edge steepness", but "slope rate" is also used. Another term used in the context is "slew rate", but it refers rather to "Anstiegsgeschwindigkeit" (rate of change) than to "Steilheit". See below:

Slope rate
Above its limiting frequency, a crossover restricts the signals which are allowed to pass through it. The extent of this damping depends on the design of the filter. Each high-pass and low-pass filter consists of complex electronic components (inductive resistors, capacitors) the number of which will determine the degree and type of signal damping, or slope rate. Each complex component strengthens the damping effect by 6 dB per octave. In other words, a first degree filter will have a slope rate of 6 dB per octave, a second degree filter one of 12 dB per octave etc.

The slope (rate of change of output voltage with respect to input voltage) can be made 0.5 by using a voltage divider network using two resistors.

1Scanmodes: In stepped scan mode, the module increases/decreases the output voltage by the user specified parameters (number of steps, holding time, voltage step). The minimum step holding time for all models is 50ms. A scan can be operated free running or synchronized to an initial TTL-Signal. Alternatively, each voltage step can be triggered by a TTL-signal. The fast linear scan of the UHPS series devices comprises a linear voltage slope by the user specified parameters (start voltage, end voltage, time duration).

Ref: LM741 as cited by Martin Crich.

The ti datasheets indicates a "slew rate" of 0.5 V/µs, but provides no translation to German. But the unit [V/μs] confirms that the slew rate is a voltage change rate in fact. This is no steepness in the proper sense.
www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/lm741.pdf

In German the slew rate is expressed as "Anstiegsflanke" or "Spannungsanstiegsrate".
https://books.google.de/books?id=GCsgBAAAQBAJ&pg=PA206&lpg=P...

https://www.google.de/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd...

https://www.google.de/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd...
