Russian term
Пожалуйте на оправку
Russian to English
Art/Literary
Poetry & Literature
From a description of a Soviet prison:
Пожалуйте на оправку! Это означало - в уборную...
The meaning is clear from the following sentence, but I'm at a loss as to what the English equivalent would be.

Go for a crap
Or go for a s***. (This question should have been given the "might offend" rating).

Time for a relief
Could be many options :)
Оправка = отправление естественных нужд
In Gulag camps, prisoners were allowed to go to a special place 1-2 times a day where they could "do their business", at all other time they were forced to do it in their cells where the closet basin was shared between many people.

An outhouse, also known by many other names, is a small structure, separate from a main building, which covers one or more toilets. This is typically either a pit latrine (long drop) or a bucket toilet, but other forms of dry (non-flushing) toilets may be encountered. The term may also be used to denote the toilet itself, not just the superstructure.

Note from asker:
Please post "freshening up" as an answer. That's probably the closest and is not as crude as the other suggestions. Perhaps "use the facilities" or "relieve yourself" would also work. In any case, I'd like to award you the points! Thank you also for the colorful list of bathroom euphemisms! |
Discussion
Freshen up означает и "посетит в туалет", и "приводит себя в порядок"
Русское слово "оправка" именно имеет такое значение, более близкий вариант. https://www.multitran.ru/c/m.exe?l1=1&l2=2&s=freshen up
freshen somebody up-to make someone or something clean and pleasant
I would suggest "Freshening up" and "take a biological break" or "call of nature"
Please, see here: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Appendix:English_toilet_slang
If you want to use real US prison slang there is a word "Cadillac" for toilet. because, toilets in prison have no seats and nothing to lift.
But the Russian word "оправку" is more general with the meaning "to put your things in order or correct yourself" for ex. clothes, etc. in other contexts.
