Discussion

Tony M Aug 16, 2017:
Term search? I'm sure we've had this before, and that earlier discussion brought up all the same points, misunderstandings, and faux amis.

Just to echo Germaine's comment: we are familiar enough with the common transitive usage of 'to avail oneself of something' — note the direct object is 'oneself! — but some people may be less aware of the probably less common intransitive usage (often passive, as here 'to be availed by') — which sense is closer to that in 'to be of no avail'.

neutral writeaway : Germaine: v.t.: to avail o.s. of sth = profiter de; availed by = v.intr. = servi, utilisé; ici, fournie, produite par/ref for your examples: http://www.linguee.com/english-french/translation/availed by...

disagree Germaine : v.t.: to avail o.s. of sth = profiter de; availed by = v.intr. = servi, utilisé; ici, fournie, produite par // Read the full definition for the verb and the full sentence for the translation. Make the difference between tr. and intr. verbs and make sense.

to avail = to take advantage = profiter de
disagree Tony M : Germaine has already perfectly explained why I too disagree with this suggestion.

Peer comment(s):

disagree Germaine : La phrase se lit "BY Mr." non "TO Mr."

availed BY mis à la disposition de
disagree Tony M : Germaine is right; this is a common misunderstanding of this term in this perhaps less common intransitive usage.

neutral Germaine : Je ne crois pas (et j'ose espérer!) que "disponibilisé" soit un mot français. "To provide, make available" = fournir (une chose), produire (un document).// Outchhh! Pour ma part, je retiendrais "Burundi" (+ France?) dans cette déf.

Et pourquoi pas disponibiliser une somme d'argent? Je suppose que le Littré c'est sufisamment able - v. ma dernière note
