French to English Other Geology Landscape description
In a description of the geological landscape in the Limousine in France. What is the meaning of rocky outcrops that are "peu marqués"? Not marked very much by what? Or perhaps "not very prominent"? Thanks in advance for any help!

Non-PRO (1): philgoddard

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Daryo Jul 27, 2017:
des affleurements rocheux peu marqués from what I could find so far, it would most literally mean that there are only few "marks" on these rocks - few visible cracks, or visible limits between layers, or visible faults ... a plain / bland surface;

OTOH " des affleurements rocheux peu marqués" could also mean that these visible rocks are not a very noticeable "mark" on the surrounding landscape - relatively small in size, not very prominent erc.

You really need to know the subject matter to decide which one makes more sense - is it more likely to find a thin layer of herbs (= "une pelouse") on barren rocks if they are more or less "unmarked" or if the rocks are a "minor mark" on the landscape?

not very pronounced

or your own suggestion of 'not very prominent' (with slight reservations)

I don't think it means 'marked' by anything, but just that these rocky outcrops (?) are not particularly noticeable — which is certainly the case here in Limousin (please note: masculine!), compared to say Provence etc. The rocks here are often igneous, and hence harder, and do not give rise so much to the craggy limestone etc. outcrops so often associated with the South of France etc.

My only qualm about 'not very prominent' in a geological context is that it could be understood to mean 'not sticking out very much', instead of the simpler meaning of 'not very visible'.

Here's just one example of 'pronounced' used in its everyday meaning or 'marked', and in a geological context.

It may not be the ideal expression to use, or not to everyone's taste — but it certainly can't be said to be outright wrong!

Oh but yes, in EN! Far wider meaning than just accents! This isn't technical geology, just a landscape description, and 'pronounced' can indeed be applied in many geological contexts.
neutral Daryo : certainly one possible interpretation, but not the only one - and so far I can't see on which grounds one would make more sense than the other ...

disagree Daryo : your reference is about "le refief" in general, not "un affleurement" - s.t. far more specific/particular

Thank you very much Phil
disagree Tony M : In this sort of context, I wouldn't tend to use 'accentuated', which to me implies some kind of deliberate act. / Leaning tower of Pisa has a pronounced (not accentuated) tilt to it — though it can be accentuated by the angle at which your photograph it.

Affleurement

agree Tony M : Confirms my 'rocky outcrops' — though your 'plan de discontinuité' is a bit of a red herring.
