Discussion

Jacek Kloskowski Jul 3, 2017:
Andrzej Mierzejewski Jul 2, 2017:
IMO "przyszło mi wejść" znaczy "wszedłem", ale wyrażone trzema słowami, podniosłym stylem.

...until into the church I went.

Just another poetic idea...

Or: ...until I made my way into the church.
Note from asker:
"until I made my way into the church" sounds perfect

when I felt the (inner) need to go to church

I read this as a transformative, spiritual event, not a chance event. The chance event could be translated as,
"After many years, that day arrived, when I happened to have entered a church."
So, there are at least two possible nuances here.

neutral LilianNekipelov : I think it is too far-fetched, and too long--it is a poem.

This is the first answer that got the sense right. Thank you, Lilian, for calling me a poet.

it dawned on me

you can see the explanation of this term when you google it - but it means you realize it for the first time or something like it occurred to me
it's more of an american expression as well
Peer comment(s):

neutral LilianNekipelov : Not in this context--it sounds really awkward.

the fate made me/led me

Peer comment(s):

agree LilianNekipelov : fate made, it happend that I entred a church, sort of.
