Spanish term

conductas alteradas

Spanish to English Social Sciences Psychology
This is from a study on ASD chidlren's responsiveness to music. They are exposed to harmonic and disharmonic music as well as ambient sounds and their behavior is observed. I'm not sure of the correct term here. They seem to be referring to
actions such as touching genitals, covering ears, rocking, sniffing objects, rubbing or wringing hands, etc.

Discussion

Muriel Vasconcellos Mar 24, 2017:
@Peter And aren't the behaviors you quote from the checklist quite similar to the ones you mention at the top of your question? In both cases you mention "touching genitals and rocking." Is "swaying" that much different from rocking?
peter jackson (asker) Mar 24, 2017:
@Muriel Early morning here in Spain. I have just checked out the aberrant behavior checklist. It seems to cover a far wider range of behaviors than the study is referring to. The article mentions 51 behaviors (¡nada menos!) but they are all things like biting nails, touching genitals, rocking, swaying, etc. Unfortunately the checklist used in the study is a Spanish one so uses "alterado", otherwise I'd have no problem.
Robert Carter Mar 23, 2017:
That's true, Muriel, but the word "aberrante" also exists in Spanish, and I can't seem to square it as being synonymous with "alterado", which to me seems to imply "distress" rather than "abnormality".
Muriel Vasconcellos Mar 23, 2017:
Aberrant behavior Notice that there is an "Aberrant Behavior Checklist for Children with Autism".

disturbed/unsettled behaviour

This seems to be the meaning. Behaviour that reflects a state of disturbance.
Note from asker:
Thanks, Simon. I have "disturbed" but was getting confused by the possibility of it actually just meaning a change in behaviour.

anomalous behavior

I think that "anomalous" is preferable to either "disturbed" or "unsettled" here on two grounds:

1. It is objectively definable.
2. It seems more commonly used by professionals who study ASD.

agitated behaviours / agitation

This seems to be a common term in connection with ASD.

When an autistic patient presents with agitated behavior, the emergency care provider must consider both emotional and somatic etiologies as well as which treatment modalities best serve the patient. Effective communication with parents, caretakers, and outpatient providers provides useful insights into likely etiologies of agitation as well as effective management strategies.
