@ Asker First of all, it would be useful to find out exactly what distinction your source text thinks it is making between 'grill' and 'griddle' here! To me, even in EN they would mean the same thing, and I don't think you'll get a more accurate translation until you can sort the s/t out.

To me, a grill has bars — if instead it has a flat top, it then becomes a 'griddle'; that is what I have always understood to be the difference between them. So on the face of it, they seem like the same thing...

HOWEVER, I suspect the difference being made here is between a grill that has ridges (so it produces burn marks rather like a pierced grill), whereas the griddle is smooth.

If this is the distinction being made, then in FR you could perhaps use 'gril' and 'plancha' (or 'plaque de cuisson' if you want to avoid the Spanish term, which is however quite fashionable in France at the moment!) — the fact they are close together means the distinction will be obivous.
