Spanish term

galera

Spanish to English Tech/Engineering Printing & Publishing
I am pretty sure this does not refer to galleys in this context, but rather to this:

https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galera_(imprenta)

The context is a story by a Mexican writer:

El hombre que en ese momento seguramente ya sabía que algunas de las galeras salidas de la propia imprenta de Gutenberg eran sólo una serie de restos de papel esparcidos sobre el lugar donde dormía

Thanks

Discussion

Muriel Vasconcellos Jan 29, 2017:
Galley in any case The only possible translation is 'galley'.
Muriel Vasconcellos Jan 29, 2017:
Sounds like a dream sequence That would be the most logical explanation - but we don't have enough context to know for sure.
Charles Davis Jan 29, 2017:
@Muriel You're right; I was a bit befuddled when I answered this last night and didn't pay enough attention to the context. It does sound as though they are the other sort of galleys, i.e. galley proofs. Unless it's some kind of strange dream. We can't (or at least I can't) tell what the reference to Gutenberg is about from this extract. Maybe it's some kind of forgery, somebody selling fake Gutenberg galley proofs (which, if they existed, would be worth millions). I don't know.
Muriel Vasconcellos Jan 29, 2017:
I'm confused ... What is the sentence saying? That what the man *thought* were galleys from the Gutenberg press were no more than scraps of paper scattered around the place where he was sleeping? It would be pretty obvious if it was a galley, wouldn't it? Whose bedroom--Gutenberg's, or the man's? It doesn't make sense to me. In any case, it would have to be paper (if the man mistook pieces of paper for galleys), whereas Charles' examples are about wooden trays.

galley

I'm sure you're right, but it's still called a galley. It's where the term galleys meaning proofs comes from.

Here's the Spanish Wikipedia page you cited:
https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galera_(imprenta)

The picture of a galley on this page is here, referred to as a "wooden type galley", with this explanation: "Galleys are trays upon which type matter is assembled either as it is set by hand or by machine on which it can be proofed or stored"
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wooden_type_galley.j...

Here's a page about Gutenberg:

"Once each line of type was completed, it was moved off the composing stick onto a board known as a galley."

Thanks, Rachel :)
agree JohnMcDove : Sí, pero en el contexto de Wendy se trata de "galeras" en el sentido de "galeradas". La definición 6 del DRAE: 6. f. Impr. galerada (‖ prueba de la composición).

Pues claro. ¡Qué torpe! No había leído bien el contexto. Tienen que ser galeradas. Gracias, John :)
agree neilmac : Yes, "galley proofs" rang a bell...

Thanks, Neil ;-) I had a job correcting galley proofs when I was a lad, but they're a thing of the past now.

http://www.businessdictionary.com/definition/galley-proof.ht...
Galley proof
Penultimate proof of a page being typeset for printing, before it is set (imposed) as a page of a book or booklet. Galley proofs are traditionally printed as a single column on a long strip of paper, and generally do not include illustrations. The next and final proof is usually the page proof. In the modern practice (where the text is set on a computer), galley proofs are dispensed with and instead a page proof are provided.
