Spanish term

la brecha es significativa favoreciendo

Spanish to English Science Education / Pedagogy EGRA test
Source text:

De acuerdo al área de residencia, la brecha es significativa favoreciendo a las escuelas urbanas. En cuanto a modalidad, las escuelas multigrados se encuentran en general en riesgo.

My try:

According to residence area, there is a significant gap/ a significant gap was reported which gives an advantage to (students from) urban schools. As for educational level, multi-grade schools are at risk.

No sé, pero me parece que en esta última parte el "en general" está de más.

the gap is significantly in favour of

"Depending on the residence area, the gap is significantly in favour of urban schools."
From the syntax, it seems the "gap" has been mentioned previously.

NB: I don't understand the translation of "modalidad"as "education level". A modality means the way things are done, more akin to a "methodology" or "approach" than a "level", IMHO.

Then again, I didn't know what they mean by "escuelas multigrados" either and had to look it up. It apparently means schools with different ability/skills/age levels in the same classes, so "level" may be appropriate after all.

En cuanto a modalidad -> In terms of category/classification, multigrade schools in general are at risk."
Note from asker:
Hi Neilmac, you're right. In this case the client translates "modalidad de eduación" as "modality of education", meaning preschool, primary elementary/secondary school.
Actually, escuelas multigrado are schools in which a single classroom contains students from first, second and even third grade.

the balance is tilted considerably in favour of

In other words, where you live, or your postcode area has a big influence on educational performance, with urban areas favoured over less urbanised areas, where the multi-grade system means that the brighter students are held back in class by the less academically gifted.
