Spanish term

derrotero

Spanish to English Tech/Engineering Surveying land dimensions in a contract
In a contract from Cuba concerning a parcel of land the subject of the contract first appears a paragraph giving the dimensions of the property, the azimuths etc and the properties which border it. After that is the heading, centred, which reads "Derrotero", just that,. In searches in monolingual and bilingual dictionaries, including Pro-Z, I have found only the translations "path, direction, chart, etc. In blog on topogrphy I found this definition "...su derrotero )cajetín de los planes en donde se expresa las coordenadas polares". Nevertheless, I cannot think of an English term for the word "derrotero". Can anyone please help me?.

Thank you, Charles.
Charles Davis Jan 12, 2017:
@Occinco I think you could use that if you like, yes. It amounts to the same thing.

Thank you both for your contributions. I don't think course is correct, I had in my questions already discounted that as a translation. Having done further research I think the translation could be "metes and bounds" which fits the description of the parcels of land given in the contract and is and older but still used method of demarcating the boundaries of a piece of properties, which is very close to the transltion Charles Davis gave. Do you both think "metes and bounds" could be the correct English equivalent of "metes and bounds?

If it's a heading The obvious question is what does it say underneath.

description of boundaries

This seems to be what it means in Cuba.

"Obtenida la delimitación del perímetro del asentamiento, se procedió a confeccionar en el terreno una descripción literal o derrotero de los límites físicos, así como la dirección que va tomando."

Here's a good example, giving the "derroteros del centro histórico" of Havana, which is precisely a verbal description of the boundaries of the area. See chapter 7, starting on p. 141:

Another example, referring to an urban development:

"DERROTERO

Possibly?

(We'd need more context, perhaps.)
