English term

advocacy

English to French Social Sciences Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc.
I know what the expression means, but I wonder how to translate it in this context. It's not a matter of "défense" in this case.

"Office of Violence Prevention
The Office of Violence Prevention partners with community stakeholders to investigate and understand the causes and consequences of gun violence.
The office is committed to preventing gun violence from occurring—through primary prevention programs, policy interventions, and advocacy."

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (2): GILLES MEUNIER, Premium✍️

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Tony M Dec 9, 2016:
@ Ana Not entirely! The problem Asker has here is that, at least on the face of it, 'advocacy' is bieng used wrongly — or at least, oddly!

Normally, 'advocacy' means standing up in support of some group of people (usually); whereas 'awareness raising' usually means drawing certain people's (or the public at large's) attention to an issue. So as such, the latter is of course often just one component of the former.

The problem here is that, from the context given to us, it is hard to see who (or what) is being 'advocated'. Could it be 'advocacy' for the victims of violence? Asker seems for some reason to think not — perhaps because of wider context not available to us? Could it be 'advocacy' in the sense of 'advocating' tougher gun control, for example? But the title of this 'Office' seems to be wider than just the gun control issue...
I confess to being somewhat stumped as to exactry what was going through the writer's mind when they chose this word!

neutral Premium✍️ : Votre proposition traduit plutôt "awareness" et l'extrait est trop général pour suggérer des 'campagnes' en soi.
