Concours complémentaire

French to English Law/Patents Law (general) Concours complémentaires de la magistrature
Does anyone know why the competitive examination "Concours complémentaires de la magistrature" is "complémentaire" or what it means in this context? How can I translate it?

It's listed in a letter of recommendation that I'm translating as one of the courses that the referee runs.

TIA.

Concours = competitive examination This should be included in whichever rendering is found to be right.

Mainland France P.S. This has nothing to do with Reunion, context is in mainland France.

Additional? Supplementary?

Supplementary examination

I think in the context of further education the right word in English woud be "supplementary" in the sense of a further or extra level of exam to "sort the sheep from the goats."
Example sentence:

" qualification technologique dans la formation professionnelle et la formation complémentaire des employés et des étudiants." Translated by Linguee as "higher technological qualifications in the training and further training of workers and students."

Peer comment(s):

agree philgoddard : Yes, or further or additional, or competition.

agree B D Finch : Having now read Alison's reference, it might be as well to make it clear that this is not an additional examination for the main recruitment pool. Perhaps "supplementary recruitment examination"?

French term (edited): Concours complémentaire de la magistrature

Reserve-list competitive judicial examination (for contingent vacancies)

Query: France, La Réunion or Mauritius - on the latter islands in the Indian Ocean where, as I understand from my fellow-Mauritian law students, the competitive exams may take a different form out-of-season.

Compare the EU's and ECHR's reserve I&T list exams
Example sentence:

Le nombre de places offertes aux concours est déterminé, annuellement, par le ministère de la Justice, en fonction des besoins prévisionnels en magistrats et des impératifs budgétaires.

agree B D Finch : I think it is unfortunate that the translator for your second reference translated it as "complementary", rather than "supplementary".
