Poisonous

Non-PRO English to Chinese Art/Literary Poetry & Literature Can Xue Short Story
In providing context and clarity for potential meaning in an English translation of Can Xue's short story The Child Who Raised Poisonous Snakes, I was wondering if there is a distinction between poisonous and venomous in Chinese like there is in English. The distinction being poisonous denotes something is harmful to consume, whereas venomous denotes an object has the ability to inflict venom or poison through a bite or otherwise.

Here is some context from the text where the characters are talking about POISONOUS snakes in both the translated english and original text

translated:I might as well have given birth to a poisonous snake!
original:这不就和我生了一条毒蛇一样可怕吗?

are they implying the same thing as they are in the English text, ie that the snakes are poisonous, harmful to eat, rather than venomous?

I am asking because this distinction goes on to be quite pertinent to the reading of the story as one of the characters consumes the snakes.

venomous snake毒蛇

I'd say the distinction is not as clear as in English. You will have to ask a few questions to figure if you will get poisoned by eating a snake. (I am not sure if there is such kind of snake.) Anyway, so in the Chinese sentence you showed here, I'd use Venomous snake instead of Poisonous.
