Ibuprofen is metabolised in animals and humans by oxidation of the isobutyl group and glucuronidation of the carboxyl moiety.
The isobutyl group is hydroxylated both on the tertiary centre, giving 2-(4-(2hydroxy-2-methylpropyl)phenyl)-propionic acid, and also on one of the methyl groups, giving 2-(4-(2-hydroxymethy1-propyl)phenyl)-propionic acid which is then further oxidized to 2-(4-(carboxypropyl)phenyl)-propionic acid.

При нитровании изобутана реакция идет преимущественно по третичному атому углерода, как и в случае бромирования.
