closing him down

English Other Sports / Fitness / Recreation
Hello everyone,

Joe Calzaghe vs, Bernard Hopkins.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fbi0k6SekyE

at 1:03:29

According to the offical transcript:

BRYCHAN ENGLISH: Bernard Hopkins is a very clever boxer. It was a really frustrating fight to watch, cos

HUW JONES: Calzaghe couldn’t get into his flow. He was just smothering him.

BRYCHAN ENGLISH: Every chance, he was just ***closing him down***.

Does closing down mean the same as clinching?

Thank you.

blocking/smothering him/not letting him get into a flow

Hopkins was stopping Calzaghe boxing the way he wanted to...blocking him each time and frustrating him

I was trying to find this meaning of "close someone down" in a dictionary but haven't found clear definitions. But it basically means stifle/repress/suffocate as if someone is not allowed even to breathe!
So, Hopkins was totally obstructing him (Calzaghe) and stopping the rhythm or flow (I presume this is talking about the early rounds before Clazaghe found a way past Hopkins?)
