German term

R - ATOM

German to English Science Cinema, Film, TV, Drama 1950\'s film
"TOD BEI 600 R - ATOM"

This is a newspaper headline in a film. Unfortunately there is no more context.

Does anyone know what R-Atom translates as? I know it must be to do with radioactivity but I don't quite know how to translate it.

Discussion

Rachel Hutcheson (asker) Jul 7, 2016:
There really isn't very much context. The character is just looking at headlines at his work at the printing press. It has nothing to do with the plot. But I need to translate the headline. It's not a film you would have heard of. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to say or not so I'd better not.
philgoddard Jul 5, 2016:
And why do you have to translate it? Is it relevant to the plot? If so, what is happening at this point in the film?
Edwin Miles Jul 5, 2016:
Can you tell us which film... ...this is?

600 Becquerel?

contrAtom: Strahlung

Wiki:"Doses of 200 to 1,000 rad delivered in a few hours will cause serious illness with poor outlook at the upper end of the range. Whole body doses of more than 1,000 rad are almost invariably fatal.[2] "
Example sentence:

The rad is a deprecated unit of absorbed radiation dose, defined as 1 rad = 0.01 Gy = 0.01 J/kg.[1]

Although the headline doesn't make much sense to me...

...this reference might help. One quote from the page: "A short-term dose of 600 roentgens would probably be fatal,"

The "R" probably refers to roentgens.
Example sentence:

A short-term dose of 600 roentgens would probably be fatal,

Note from asker:
Thank you. This definitely appears to be the right answer. And Wikipedia (the source of all knowledge!) also lists its symbol as R. Would you like to post this as an answer so that I can choose it?
