Spanish term

P.P.I.B.

Spanish to English Tech/Engineering Transport / Transportation / Shipping Term from Spanish Ship Registry document
I am translating a ship registry document.

Under "MOTORES INSTALADOS" it says:

Clase Marca-Modelo
P.P.I. B. CUMMINS-QSB 5.9

Does anyone know what P.P.I.B. stands for please?

Thanks in advance.

@Anne If I ever find out the exact definition I'll let you know!
Anne Bitton (asker) Jun 29, 2016:
I asked the client and he thinks it should translate as "Inboard Propeller Propulsion Motors", but still not sure what each letter stands for. Perhaps they just used too many "Ps"!?
Helena Chavarria Jun 29, 2016:
P.P. I think it could stand for 'Propulsión' and 'Propulsor'. I've seen 'inboard drive', 'inboard propulsion system', but 'Type: inboard' seems to be the most common way of putting it.
Anne Bitton (asker) Jun 29, 2016:
Thanks for the help. Still rather baffled. Might make more sense if just one "p". The client might know I suppose.
Helena Chavarria Jun 28, 2016:
I think it means 'inboard propulsion' but I can't find a suitable abbreviation in English.

P.P.I.B. must mean Propulsión/propulsor intrabordo

Page 41 It's in Catalan but here's a rough translation:

Propulsión/propulsor, tipo
El yate MAVAROS está diseñado para ser propulsado por 2 motores. La potencia máxima del yate es de 330kW. Los motores que encontramos instalados en el yate son de la clase P.P.I.B, de la marca y modelo VOLVO PENTA-KAD32P, tanto uno como el otro.

The IB part must be intrabordo; there's also PPFB, where FB must be fuera bordo. But I don't know about the PP part. Could one of the Ps be for propulsión, maube?

Peer comment(s):

agree Charles Davis : In context, just "Inboard". There don't seem to be any sources that prove exactly what PP stands for, but it's something to do with propulsion, clearly, and in practice it's redundant in English.

Thank you, Charles :-) I would love to know what the 'P.P.' is but I haven't been able to find out :(
