If problem solver is not careful, a great deal of time can be wasted creating an understanding of the system which is not associated with the cause of the problem. It is therefore important that the problem solving method is focused sharply on the area of the system that is creating the problem rather than focusing on the systems as a whole e.g. the specific machine subassembly, software sub-routine or process in the value stream etc. that is creating the problem.
