Swedish term

Fiske med utter eller nät är förbjudet.

Swedish to English Tech/Engineering Fisheries
Having great difficulty with the term 'utter' - appears to be a fishing aid that looks like a mini catamaran (see link). Any ideas what this is in English?

Leif Ohman Jun 2, 2016:
or like a hydra... ... which both Sw. utter and Eng. otter seem to derive from
Michael Ellis Jun 2, 2016:
Otters playing I assumed it was named after the way it leaps and bobs at the surface like an otter playing, before it takes the sweep/net down to the required depth.
Leif Ohman Jun 1, 2016:
Utterly utterless utter I became intrigued by the utter absence of any reference to the animal itself in all the related references, other than Deane's.

Instead, it seems to get bundled with all sorts of obviously questionable fishing techniques, like the use of firearms. I think you should have simply followed the link from the second image in your reference:

planer board

"Planer board fishing" eller "planer board trolling" verkar motsvara fiskemetoden med utter. En bild-googling ger många träffar på fiskeredskap av samma typ och i många varianter.

agree Norskpro : Yes, after finding pages in both Norwegian and Danish about "oter" or "oterfiske", it seems that a planer board is comparable to "utter".

otter board

Can't say I've ever hear about this, but I found a reference to 'utterbräda', whichl led to this https://archive.org/details/otterboarddesign034863mbp.

See if this helps!

Yup, looks like both terms are used. As in:

Great question!

agree Michael Ellis : You got it Deane! Naval minesweepers just call it an "otter", as do many trawlermen. See www.minesweepers.org.uk/sweeping.htm and www.fao.org › FAO Home › Fisheries & Aquaculture

Thanks, Michael! Nice link...
neutral Leif Ohman : size might be an issue. I saw "stålbord" for "Otter board" in EU legislation. It may be that Swedish uses a different term for the small ones.

Won't argue with this one, seems to be a variety of usages in both languages.
