ＳＶＲには、複数個のタップを有する単巻変圧器が内蔵されている。ＳＶＲが線路電圧を昇圧および降圧もしない場合は、タップ位置は素通しタップであるが、自動で昇圧または降圧する際は、ＳＶＲの構成機器である電圧調整継電器が作動して、タップ位置が素通しタップから昇圧タップまたは降圧タップへ自動的に切り換えられる。
