African poetry
The storm was raging,
Goats and fowls were struggling in the water,
The angry water of the cruel sea;
The lap-lapping of the bark water at the shore,
And above the sobs and the deep and low moans,
Was the eternal hum of the living sea.
Goats and fowls were struggling in the water,
The angry water of the cruel sea;
The lap-lapping of the bark water at the shore,
And above the sobs and the deep and low moans,
Was the eternal hum of the living sea.

Ou seja, «the lap lapping» = o marulhar cadente >> «of the bark water» = do ralhar da água >> «at the shore» = na costa
Ou seja, «the lap lapping» = o marulhar cadente >> «of the bark water» = do ralhar da água >> «at the shore» = na costa
Discussion
From wordreference.
Lapping is a gentle sound. We say a dog is lapping up water when he drinks. Waves lapping at the shore are small and make a very quiet slapping sound against the shore. Ocean waves do not "lap", for example.

First, there's the poetry reading, then the academic component, and finally the solo sensitivity when one reads and interprets the poem and the verse.
Lap, lapping! Double whammy! Onomatopoeia & alliteration!! WHAT A TO-DO! Do you simply choose the most appropriate verb .... or use....i's got me STUMPED! probably in the spirit of the original (Poetic sense) marulhar cadente do ralhar da água sounds best.
No entanto, "dark water" parece atender mais o contexto do poema, que é
sombrio conforme se pode apreender dos seguintes termos que nele aparecem: raging-struggling-cruel sea-sobs-deep and low moans.
