English term

as opposed to being played in prison or in a tuxedo

English to German Other Gaming/Video-games/E-sports Boardgame
It's the instruction of a board game. This is the half-sentence where this phrase occurs. It must be a play on words of some kind which I don't understand.

"The game is played in turns (as opposed to being played in prison or in a tuxedo)..."

The joke has nothing to do with the game's content or background. It stands for itself.
Proposed translations (German)
3 statt im Gefängnis oder in einem Smoking

Niels Stephan Mar 22, 2016:
Klingt dann wohl nach LocJam, die Vermuting hatte ich anfangs bereits. In dem Fall gehört die Frage übrigens nicht undokumentiert hierher ....
Bernd Albrecht Mar 22, 2016:
Standardtext einer unbezahlten Probe-Übersetzung? Handelt es sich hier mögllicherweise um einen kostenlosen Probetext?

There are also a number of jokes and puns in the text, for example [The game is played in turns (as opposed to being played in prison, or in a tuxedo)], so we will want to give them extra attention, as some of them won’t translate literally.

Ja, und ... ... außerdem ist es Krautsourcing (das ist mein Lieblings-dämliches-Wortspiel)
Caro Maucher Mar 22, 2016:
Ist das jetzt schon Schwarmintelligenz? :-D

Voll lustig ... ein Rudelgedanke!

Hoppla, Ricki war schneller!
Niels Stephan Mar 22, 2016:
I believe it is not a play on words, there is no hidden meaning. It is played in turns. Not in a prison. Not in a tuxedo. In turns.
It is supposed to be funny. If it is a play on words it is a play on the various possible meanings of "in"(clothes, location and so on).
Caro Maucher Mar 22, 2016:
So wie ich das verstehe, ist das ein ziemlich billiges Wortspiel auf die Parallelität von *in* turns, *in* prison, *in* a tuxedo. Ich denke, du verlierst nichts, wenn du es einfach unter den Tisch fallen lässt.
Ricki Farn Mar 22, 2016:
Word play ... ... on the different ways the word "in" can be used, and no, it doesn't work in German: IN turns (die Spieler abwechselnd), IN prison (im Gefängnis), IN a tuxedo (mit einem feinen Anzug).
You could leave it out altogether (many customers instruct me to just leave out the jokes and puns), or you would have to find something in German that is grammatically parallel, but contentwise unrelated. Difficult -- "die Spieler sind abwechselnd am Zug (statt im Zug oder auf der Zugspitze)"; "die Spieler sind abwechselnd am Zug (statt am Futtern oder am Ende ihrer Kräfte)" -- that's really stupid, but maybe the more literary translators have better ideas?
