Discussion

Diarmuid Kennan Mar 10, 2016:
Agneta - I just realized I misread your comment - I thought you wrote "It IS a document..."
Daniel Löfström Mar 10, 2016:
The same word (opponent) has been used on the undergraduate level in Sweden, as well. The question is whether this rather clumsy neologism (diskutant) has come to be. Either it is meant to replace "opponent" (maybe the word is perceived to be too aggressive these days) or it is supposed to have another meaning (to differentiate from "opponent").
Diarmuid Kennan Mar 10, 2016:
When I was in university, we used the Danish word "opponent" to describe this role. The opponent was another student at the same level and their (our) role was to provide constructive criticism.
Daniel Löfström Mar 10, 2016:
I believe it to be a separate role. This document from KTH outlines the process towards the doctoral thesis. It appears that the "opponent" role is reserved for the final examination, whereas "diskutant" is used for a similar role in the setting of a preparatory seminar. On the other hand, terminology might vary between universities. https://www.kth.se/polopoly_fs/1.467347!/Prestationsgrad_dok...
Thomas Johansson Mar 10, 2016:
In case it's a separate role, I would suggest "reviewer".

discussant

Diskutant is also used in the more common sense of discussant, first commentator on a subject presentation at a conference, see e.g. http://www.it.uu.se/research/group/upcerg_new/events/ws_okt1...
Peer comment(s):

agree Diarmuid Kennan : I agree that the meaning is discussant, but not a document, at least in this context. However, it appears it is also not an opponent at an examination, as I previously proposed.

Thanks for your contributions, Diarmuid - I think I've pieced them together now! :)
agree Thomas Johansson : Seems to be this. Google for: thesis opponent "discussant"

Thanks Thomas!

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I suppose that this is something that is open to discussion, and it might need a moderator, unless the discussant was a moderator rather than an opponent. So I guess, it might depend upon what the party, the discussant, thought their role was."

(thesis) opponent

It might vary between universities, e.g. some use critic, opponent, official opponent, opponent critic, eyc.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Agneta Pallinder : It's in a document that deals with discussions of thesis work in progress.

Hi Agneta, I think you may be wrong in this context. The line before the quoted text is "Inför seminariet utses en eller flera diskutanter med minst doktorsexamen, vilka står för granskning och inledande diskussion av den framlagda planen.
