: The trouble is, that usually translates 'onglet' in FR, and I don't believe the writer would have used a deliberately ambiguous term here.

The patte is the line linking two boxes in a relationship diagram. It may have various symbols on it (arrowheads, crows feet, circles etc.) to indicate the type of relationship involved between the two linked entities.

The actual diagram below and referred to in the citation above doesn't bother with an arrowhead, though others in the same text do, but that does make it clear the "patte" is the connecting line, not an arrow or arrowhead (which would be "flèche").

Not to be confused with "patte d'oie", which is a crow's foot and can appear on the end of a line in a relationship diagram.
Discussion
On a le choix entre trois types de pattes.
Patte porteuse : elle est unique. Elle portera les propriétés de la relation ou de l’individu. Cette patte permet d’accéder à une occurrence le plus vite possible. La patte porteuse sera donc la patte qu’on utilisera le plus fréquemment pour accéder à un record logique.
Patte conséquence : elle est associée à une patte porteuse d’une relation (elle ne peut donc être déclarée que si une patte porteuse a déjà été déclarée). Elle permet d’accéder relation à partir d’autres identifieurs que ceux de la porteuse. On déconseille de définir une patte conséquente pour des individus (d’un point de vue de forme cela est incorrect).
Patte index : Elle permet d’accès à une occurrence par une clé secondaire. Elle est définie dés lors que des accès fréquents existent sur des propriétés non clés.
