Hi,

I am translating the description of a duvet set for an online retailer from French to British English.

This description contained the problematic expression:
"Qualité douce et soyeuse. Touché peau de pêche. Confort et douceur. Linge de qualité"

Would "peachskin touch" be an appropriate translation in this situation? Or would something like "peachskin fabric" be better?

peachskin (touch) fabric Peachskin is used. See references post. @Gallagy, yes, the text is referrring to the feel of the fabric, which is the whole point in fact. Fabric with a peachskin finish can be polyester, coton, whatever.

I've seen 'touché' before in these texts and on research I discovered it equates to feel like touching (in this case a peach).
Anyway, I'd never seen "peachskin" before but yes, surprised to see it does exist as a fabric but here I believe the text is talking about the feel of softness rather than saying the fabric is peachskin.
Peachskin BTW seems to be like mock suede so would seem to be rather manly...so don't understand Sheila's comment?

Buying peaches A man might not necessarily be interested in "peach"-like sheets, but often a woman will be buying household items and this is a marketing type text. I can't see how that is really an issue. I would probably choose something peach-like as opposed to "brushed cotton".

I'd worm my way round it, Julia I'd probably prefer to avoid talking about peaches at all, particularly for household linens. My husband would NEVER sleep under a peachskin duvet but if it was very cold he might sleep under a brushed cotton one (not necessarily suggesting that as a translation here).

@ Sheila Like you I'm surprised to see that 'peachskin' is a description in English - I've never seen it myself... However, I wonder if it can apply to bed linen - unless it is actually faux suede / similar. Would it be safer to avoid 'peach' references, and go with something like 'luxuriously soft'? ('Soft' may, of course, have already featured in the previously sentences).

Your answers are correct, and mine is not faithful to the letter of the text, but the sense of the text is fully there, with a sound that I like...

velvety feel

I think "velvety" is used more often in EN than "peach" to describe the softness of textiles (even if the fabric is not velvet).

Soft as a peach

This expression is quite common and conveys the idea. I would leave out the "skin" image - we can say "soft as a baby's bottom", but I wouldn't put that here as it is only needed in the French expression.
Example sentence:

"Beneath it was a doublet of black damask, SOFT AS A PEACH to the touch, beautifully tailored and backed with fine, inky quilted silk."

"Soft as a peach, luxury microfiber sheets are nonetheless durable and wash well for consistent use as staple bedding"

"Peachskin" is a specific type of fabric finish. It applies across a wide range of materials but the finish is closer to a very smooth soft daim-suèdine finish than velvet, something inbetween, peachskin!
