1.1 Belimumab is not recommended, within its licensed indication, as
add-on therapy in adults with active, autoantibody-positive systemic
lupus erythematosus with a high degree of disease activity (for

Purpose
The purpose of this study is to further enhance the existing knowledge regarding the side effects of belimumab when given with other lupus medicines to adults with active systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

Aetna considers belimumab (Benlysta) medically necessary for the treatment of adults (aged 18 years or older) with active systemic lupus erythematosus and positive autoantibody test (e.g., anti-nuclear antibody [ANA] greater than or equal to 1:80 and/or anti-double-stranded DNA [anti-dsDNA] greater than or equal to 30 IU/ml) and who are receiving standard therapy comprising any of the following (alone or in combination): anti-malarials, corticosteroids, immunosuppressives (excluding intravenous cyclophosphamide), and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and with no exclusion criteria.
