Chinese to English Other Poetry & Literature Crime Novel

This is a term I have come across in a crime novel, so I need to figure out what makes the best sense so an American reader will understand. I think I have come across this word in a museum and culture context, where authentication makes a lot of sense. Perhaps evidence identification?

The word comes up twice in the last paragraph. The book is called 无证之罪 and the general story is that a former criminal investigator/forensic analyst helps two young people to cover up a crime that was an accident.

他心中突然有一种莫名的冲动，纠结了几下后，终于这一次，冲动战胜了理智，他骤然转过身，快步走到两个人面前，停顿了一下，还是开口道：“如果，如果还有其他的挽回办法，你们想尝试吗？”

说完这句，骆闻自己心中也咯噔了一下。

Again I'm looking for something that is relatively easy to understand (this is a novel, not a textbook) and hopefully a term that makes sense in a US context. Thanks very much for any suggestions!
