English term

as

English to French Other Government / Politics international development
I was wondering if a native speaker (or anybody brighter than I am!) could give me the meaning of "as" in the sentence below, help me find its antecedent, or plainly clarify the whole sentence for me. Thank you!

The event will also promote the initiatives, processes and partnerships of the stakeholders, and consolidate commitment for their success, as contributions to the development agenda and the preparations of the conference.

Discussion

B D Finch Jul 3, 2015:
The antecedants The antecedants are "[promotion of] the initiatives, processes and partnerships of the stakeholders, and [consolidation of] commitment for their success". The problem is that one expects the antecedant of "as contributions to" to be a noun or nouns; however, because of the need for active verbs in the first part of the sentence, the noun form as antecedant is just implied.

Not a native speaker or smarter than you but perhaps:

"en tant que contributions (à)"

I'm pretty confident that the meaning of 'as' here is 'comme' or 'à titre de...'.

However, I have to say, I am very far from clear what the antecedents are — on the face of it, it looks like 'promote and consolidate', but comparing these two verbs to the noun 'contributions' actually sounds all wrong to me; so either the writer got their grammar muddled up, or else I'm wrong, and the antecedents are all of those preceding nouns listed. I have to confess it's all abit gobbledy-gook to me and I don't really know what they're trying to get at; maybe your wider context makes it clearer to you!

à titre de contributions ou en tant que contributions. The first option is more elegant and idiomatic.

Yes, it is a more idiomatic and colloquial way to word the sentence as such. Thanks!
