English term

pallet talks and monitors

English Other Telecom(munications) general
Dear colleagues,

The general context is very hazy, but they talk about communication within sites of the company. Even then, I don't know what they are talking about here. I need your help first of all in understanding this phrase in the following sentence,
" ... confirmed that there were many communication channels available, including pallet talks and monitors set up in some sites to provide employees with access to intranet, however, use of the latter had proved very disappointing."

Is it about means of projecting the info on site, like 'monitors' suggest? Intranet is usually not about on-site communication, and a bit earlier they talked about some employees not having proper e-mail addresses. I find very scant references to what "pallet talks" could mean, but I don't understand the phrase, especially because it is not explained, rather used as general notions in the title of pages. Any light would be highly appreciated.

Thanks, guys, here's the answer from the client: ' "Pallet talks" means having short meeting on the shop floor and often the workers sit on a pallet.' This is the exact quote, probably meant to be in the plural. You were guessing correctly with almost no context, but that often happens, same here. Once again, thanks for thinking along.
Peter Simon (asker) Jun 30, 2015:
Terry, it can't be ruled out as a logistics company needs pallets, so they may have something to do with that newsletter. You could put it on as an answer, why not? Thanks for thinking along, but I can't award points for discussion entries, unfortunately.

National Wooden Pallet and Container Industry Apparently, Pallet Talk is a newsletter from the National Wooden Pallet and Container Industry. I don't know if it's the same one they are talking about here but it makes my guess seem reasonable...

Terry, Thanks, I've just thought of the soap-box speakers at Hyde Park ... I've just told my contact person.

Separate things These are two examples of the "many communication channels available".

Pallet talks could be some kind of informal communications where somebody literally stands on a pallet and tells people what is going on. Or it could just be an internal name for some form of communications - a newsletter or in-house magazine perhaps? I think you need to ask the customer about this one.
Peter Simon (asker) Jun 30, 2015:
Terry, thanks. I first had to suppose they belong to the same system that's why the Q includes both. Could be separate. The company is in logistics actually.
Terry Richards Jun 30, 2015:
Two questions... The pallet talks and monitors are two separate things. The monitors are terminals to access the intranet. I have no idea what a pallet talk is but what does the company do/make? Pallet talk could be an internal usage or phrase.

agree Tony M : 'pallet talk' is probably like a 'toolbox talk' — a brief, informal meeting in the workplace to discuss one specific topic for a short time.

Yes, or it could be a regularly (weekly/monthly?) scheduled communications meeting. I don't think we can squeeze much more out of the context :)
agree jccantrell : Agree with Tony -- "water cooler chat" is usually about rumors, but it IS a communications path in the USA.
