This sentence is taken from a nurse training transcript.
I think I know what this sentence means, something along the lines of: the higher grade in one teaching unit cannot be used to compensate for the lower grade in another teaching unit.
But I'm not 100% sure and I can't think of an elegant way of saying this in English or perhaps there is a standard phrase to express this in English.

: When I worked in a univeristy, they talked about "compensation" as Simona described above, i.e. higher grades in one module making up for lower grades in another. I'm not sure substitute expresses this.

The way this "compensation" works is in effect to transfer some of the points obtained in one module to another module, so that each of the two modules are above the "pass" threshold.
