: My gut reaction, but then I decided that Ondrej was specifically asking about the "volná". Neither "open" nor "non-frozen" works here, and the geological definition would look overly cumbersome. Perhaps you're right, less is best.

Thank you, Stuart! The term "volná voda" here sounds a bit strange to me in Czech and I think that it simply means "plocha vodní plochy" (which was avoided by the writer) and the "volná" is a bit redundant in this context. Therefore, I suggested this :)
