If the nerve is being freed up from within bone, then the translation would be drilled free from the surrounding bone. Exposed is inadequate. If it is being freed from tissue, then my translation still fits. The ASKER will need to clarify exactly where the procedure is being done, and whether the text is literal (drilled free) or figurative in terms of dissecting.

Ich habe nicht behauptet, dass man den Nerv in Teile schneidet. Du hast das English nicht richtig verstanden. Ich, auf der anderen Hand, dachte nur an die extracranialen Teile des Nerves, die nicht von Knochen umgeben sind. Eine gute Uebersetzung fehlt.
