Hi all,

translating bidding terms and conditions for supply of military uniforms. The above expression, "coyote" particularly, stumps me.

Context: "2 X 2 mètres de maille coyote non feu pour le corps et le col"

I get that it's some kind of fireproof or flame-resistant fabric (rather than mesh), but what about coyote? Searched far and wide for "maille coyote" without luck.

Colour Re-reading the text in light of Charles's suggestion. It does make a lot more sense if it's the color of the fabric. Thank you all for your input.

rip-stop pattern weave fabric Another convoluted search led me to this (on a combat apparel website, verified via wiki and google search). It's a special kind of woven fabric that has interlocking weave to prevent ripping. Sounds like coyote maille.

@Jane Thank you! I did find lots of entries via Google for coyote maille, but I'm perplexed. This seems to refer to a type of chain mail, and somehow I doubt that the French Army is commissioning uniforms made of chain mail...now.

I'm not saying it can't be coyote weave (which I must admit is completely new to me), but coyote colour in a military uniform strikes me as much more likely.

Another point is that as far as I know maille is not a woven fabric.

It is true that "coyote" is a shade of colour reminiscent of the animal cayote, but in this context, it is actually a method of chain weaving that combines Japanese and European patters to form a Box Chain pattern. This technique can be used in the form of a band or a larger piece fabric.

Thank you. This link came up in the discussion threads above. However, are we sure this refers to regular fabric? The contract is for combat shirts, and if you look at military equipment, however the fabric is knit or woven, I feel that using "chainmaille" would really throw off the reader. Not chain maille, no chain links, no coats of mail. Just regular military shirts.
